Week 6 Lab
"Africa" Source
I chose to watch the TED Talks for this week's lab project. The TED Talks were very interesting and had my attention for the entirety of the videos. The TED Talks brought up very important subjects that make the mind think hard about them. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie spoke about her life as she grew up in a middle-class family in Africa. She talked about how she started reading and writing at an early age and that the only books she could get her hands on were American and British. She read these stories and noticed that everyone in them was white and had blue eyes, so she thought this was the norm. She would go on to write her own stories, and she would make her characters have white skin and blue eyes because she thought this was how it was supposed to be. However, as she grew older she was able to read more and learn about the world as a whole. She started to understand that because she could only read American and British books, she had only been reading one story her entire life. This is how it was for most African children. There were not enough African books, so everything that they were reading was from a different country and a different lifestyle altogether. Adichie spoke about how it is bad to have just one story, and how we need to expand our knowledge so that we are informed of the world around us. I think this was a very powerful message and one that everyone needs to hear. It is about being sympathetic to everyone around you and opening your eyes to different cultures and ideas.
